Suiryo (Japanese 水量 or すいりょ) is a webcomic transcribed from its novelised version, by Camisado. Suiryo is based in a boarding school with which it shares its name, and largely follows the adventures of one teacher, Kaz Tamada, and a student, Mel Hoyland. Suiryo was originally a webcomic published on deviantART and Smack Jeeves titled ヤ。オ。イ。 ボ。イ。 (ya.o.i. bo.i.; read as "yaoi boy"), and was created in August 2005. Suiryo is its remaking.

Plot

The premise to the newest version of the webcomic is that a hotel owner named Mondo Tamada has just been shot dead. This scene takes place several months before the beginning of the main story.

Kaz Tamada

玉田風雪「カッズ」- tama da kaze yuki "kazzu"

Kazeyuki "Kaz" Tamada (Jr.) is the main character of the story. He is a teacher of Geology and Physical Geography - he never qualified to teach Human Geography.

Jade Cook

ジェイド・クック - jeido kuuku

Jade is from Northern England. She speaks little Japanese and is Kaz's roommate at Suiryo in the teacher dorms. She teaches Theology. She got her job through her best friend, Midorikawa. Jade is also good friends with Leigh and Beatrix. She loves IKEA and shouldn't be put in charge of a bank account. She has a yellow VW Beetle and a cat called Simon.

Isamu Yamada

山田勇 - yama da isamu

Yamada teaches Mathematics at Suiryo. He has an apparently very complicated past with Kaz. While Yamada enjoys teasing him with it, Kaz doesn't like to talk about it. Yamada happens to be one of Asami's affairs. Kaz isn't impressed by this.

Kazeyuki Tamada (Sr.)

玉田風雪 - tama da kaze yuki

Kazeyuki (known to Jade and Midorikawa as "Kazeyuki+") is the patriarch of the Tamada family, and founder-headmaster of Suiryo. He's supportive of Kaz and probably keeps too many secrets about his school for his staff's security.

Leigh O'Malley

リー・オ・マッリー - rii o marrii

Leigh is the slightly manic but very beautiful school librarian. She's Irish, very stylish, and probably drinks too much coffee. Out of school, she lives with Jade, Midorikawa and Beatrix. Famous for scaring students out of the library.

Beatrix Adel

ビートリックス・アデル - biaatorikkusu aderu

Antipodean Beatrix is the youngest staff member at Suiryo. She's a very efficient receptionist and PA to Kazeyuki, but does assist Leigh in terrifying the students in the library. She is good friends also with Jade and Midorikawa.

Bryony May

ブライオニー・メイ - buraioni mei

Bryony teaches Music and Photography at Suiryo. Bryony is very much in love with both her subjects...and Kaz. She's too shy to talk to Kaz, and mistakenly believes he's involved with Jade, especially after an incident rumoured about by her students.

Mel Hoyland

Demi Hoyland

デミ・ホイランド - demi hoirando

Demi is Mel's younger sister. She's a little bit emo and contrasts staggeringly against her girly and pink best friend, Ichigo. She's very mature for her age and is very protective of Mel. Demi is hiding the fact that she might be into girls, due to the way their mother reacted to Mel's sexuality. She prefers to speak Japanese over English, and is not as proficient as her brother.

Ichigo Mizusawa

水川苺 - mizu sawa ichigo

Ichigo's idol is probably Otsuka Ai. She loves bubbly J-Pop and the colour pink. She's had a crush on Mel since forever and has to settle for being his friend. Ichigo's parents are rich and famous and have little time for her.

Shou Mizusawa

水川翔 - mizu sawa shou

Shou is the cousin of Ichigo. He doesn't know who his father is. He and Ichigo get along well, and he has some romantic interest vested in Demi. He lives with his mother, Hikaru, next door to Ichigo and her parents. Ichigo's parents pay for their house, and for Shou to attend Suiryo.

Kaneko Tatchell

金子・ターチェル - kane ko taacheru

Kaneko is an exceedingly tall friend and classmate of Mel's. They're both in Jade's tutor group. Kaneko tells everyone she's part Amazonian due to her height. She's very pretty and likes hair accessories. Her father is an English investment banker.

Mark Hoyland

マーク・ホイランド - maaku hoirando

Mark is Mel and Demi's father, husband to Kitako. He's the computer system administrator at University of Louisville. He met Kitako in a seedy bar in Hokkaido on a gap year trip. He still only knows enough Japanese to get a girl pregnant.

Kitako Hoyland

北子・ホイランド - kita ko hoirando

Hokkaido-born Kitako is mother to Mel and Demi. She has moved to Tokyo away from her xenophobic parents, and so that Mel and Demi could attend Suiryo. She's very close to her children - although Mel's open homosexuality tries their relationship - and loves her long-distance American husband very much. Kitako is an excellent cook.

Erika Tamada

玉田えりか - tama da erika

Erika is matriarch of the Tamada family and runs the family home as a traditional Japanese temple in the outskirts of Nagasaki. Erika is a xenophobe and homophobe. While she appears to despair of Kaz entirely, he's the child she's most proud of.

Asami Tamada

玉田朝美 - tama da asa mi

Asami is the middle sister of Kaz and Ren. She doesn't get along very well with either of them, or her father. Asami is engaged to the owner of a hotel and shares the management job, though she tends to sleep around. A lot.

Ren Tamada

玉田蓮 - tama da ren

"Ren-chan" is Kaz's younger sister, with whom he shares a lot of his physical features. While only 16 years old, Ren is just as tall as her 26-year-old brother; Kazeyuki comments that they could pass as fraternal twins. She is very attached to Kaz, and their father. As daddy's little girl, she eventually manages to wangle her way into Suiryo as a student. Ren is very stubborn and opinionated.

Mondo Tamada

玉田門度 - tama da mon do

Fearne Bailey

ファーン・ベイリー - faan beirii

Fearne is the mother of Saki. Fearne is trying to find the Japanese father of her daughter, with the help of Erika and Asami...who apparently know something about him. Fearne is very pretty and fashionable.

さき・玉田・ベイリー - saki tama da beirii

Simon Hoyland

サイモン・ホイランド - saimon hoirando

Simon is the older brother of Mark, and adoptive father to Anne. While having no luck in romance, Simon still wanted a family like Mark, so he decided adoption was a good idea. He does switchboard and customer service work at the University of Louisville.

Anne Hoyland

アン・ホイランド - an hoirando

Anne is the adopted daughter of Simon James Hoyland, and cousin to Mel and Demi. Originally from Indiana, Anne lost her sight and her parents as a baby in an accident involving fireworks. She and her adoptive father live with Mark. Anne attends duPont Manual High School.

Mel, Demi, Ichigo and their families live in the Ebisu area of Shibuya.

Nagasaki, Kyūshū

Nagasaki is where the two Tamada families live and where Yamada grew up. Kaz and Yamada went to private school here; their homeroom and Geography teacher was Mokushou, who inspired Kaz's current career. Erika runs a traditional shrine here and currently lives with her youngest daughter, Ren-chan.

U.S.A.

Louisville, Kentucky

Mark Hoyland, his brother Simon and Simon's adopted daughter Anne live in Louisville. Mark and Simon work for the University of Louisville.

U.K. and Éire

Jade, Midorikawa and Bryony are from varying parts of England. Leigh is from Éire (the Republic of Ireland).

Beatrix is from Victoria.
